How Geothermal Systems Work

At about 20 feet underground, the earth stays at about 50 to 60 degrees year-round in the South Jersey area. Geothermal heat pumps take advantage of this by using an antifreeze solution circulating though a ground loop to absorb heat in the winter. Then, it brings the heat inside through a heat exchanger connected to a heat pump. During the summer, heat is absorbed from inside and deposited underground, cooling your home. The most common types of ground loops include:

  • Horizontal – Horizontal ground loops use large coils of tubing that are installed in horizontal trenches. These systems require more surface area but are often easier and less costly to install than vertical loops.
  • Vertical – Vertical ground loops use pipes installed in vertically drilled holes that are connected together through a horizontal manifold. These systems require less surface area but can be more expensive to install.
  • Pond/lake – In pond or lake loops, coils of tubing are laid at the bottom of a nearby body of water, using the surrounding liquid as a heat exchange medium instead of the ground. These systems may be the easiest to install, but they require access to a pond or lake.

A geothermal heat pump system offers extremely efficient heating and cooling, long-term utility savings, and a payback period of as little as five years.
